1. What is the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist?

An orthodontist has 2-3 years of additional training above the 4 years of dental school. An orthodontist specializes in the straightening of teeth, and aligning the jaws. Orthodontist are dentists first, but they go on to receive advanced training specializing in all aspects of orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics. In my case, I attended the University of Washington Dental School for 4 years, after that I attended Oregon Health Science University for an addiitonal 2.5 years where I practiced only orthodontics. It was here that I earned my specialty cerficate in orthodontics as well as my Master's degree in Orthodontics (MS) for research that I also undertook during this time. 

2. Do you treat adults?

Absolutely. It is never too late to improve your smile. In fact, more and more adults are opting to receiving orthodontic treatment than ever. We offer traditional braces as well as removable aligners for adults. A healthy, beautiful smile can improve self-esteem, no matter the age. Our office is a welcoming environment for patients of all ages, with areas set aside for adults and areas that are more kid-friendly! 3. Can I wear braces and play sports?

Yes, but it is a good idea to wear a mouth-guard while playing certain sports. We will provide brace-friendly mouth-guards to all of our sporty, active patients, free of charge. I have seen too many teeth damaged from contact sports in my years of practice, and I strongly urge the use of mouth-guards, for both patients and people who aren't wearing braces! An 'ounce of prevention' is worth more than a 'pound of cure' when it comes to protecting teeth!

4. Will I be able to play a musical instrument while wearing braces?

It will take some getting used to, but with practice and time you will adjust to wearing braces and return to your normal activity. For some people, choosing aligner therapy is the best option, which allows patients to remove the aligners for performances. We will go over all of the options at your consulation so you can decide what is best for you.

5. Can I afford braces?

When you come to see us for a free consultation, we will outline the cost of your treatment. You will have the opportunity to talk to our treatment coordinator about the different financing and payment options. Also, many dental insurance plans now cover some of the costs of orthodontic treatment. Our office is very affordable and we have many flexible payment options.

6. Will braces hurt?

At the onset you will experience some soreness and gum tenderness. But, as a whole, new technologies and orthodontic options have made the process of wearing braces a much more enjoyable and often shorter experience than year's past. 

7. What if I don't want my braces to show?

Several different types of braces are available today, including clear brackets and plastic tray aligners. When you come for your initial consultation, we will present you with the variety of options available to you, as well as the pros and cons of each.

8. When is the right time to start treatment?

Every child develops differently and at unique rates. If you are considering braces for your child, but are concerned it may be too soon, schedule an appointment with us for a consultation. We like to do our first orthodontic check at the age of 7. At this age we usually don't start treatment, but we have a good idea as to what problems or patterns are developing so that future plans and recall visits can be scheduled. Consultations are completely free and non-binding. At the consultation we will be able to tell you if your son or daughter is ready or if we should hold off on treatment for months or even years down the road. You can be assured that you will receive a fair evaluation and we will never recommend treatment if it is too soon.

9. Do I need a referral to make an appointment?

While a number of our patients do come from dentist referrals, you do not need a referral to make an appointment. If you feel that orthodontic treatment is needed for your child or yourself, we welcome you to schedule an appointment with us for a free consultation.

10. Do you offer aligners for teens as well as adults?

Yes! Sometimes aligners therapy is the best option, regardless of age. Schedule a consulation and we will go over all of the pros and cons of each type of orthodontic appliance.
