Dental Hygiene

A beautiful smile brightens up any day...just ask Eva!Excellent dental hygiene is always important, especially during your time in braces. Visiting your orthodontist for monthly visits is not a replacement for regular visits to your dentist for cleanings and maintenance.

The great part about receiving orthodontic treatment is that straight teeth contribute to healthy teeth and gums. Properly aligned teeth and jaws may alleviate or prevent physical health problems and make it easier for you to maintain proper dental hygiene.

Tips For Good Hygiene While In Braces

  1. Schedule professional cleanings at the dentist's office at least every six months to keep teeth and gums in top condition during orthodontic treatment. Even with diligent attention to daily dental hygiene, professional cleanings are key in removing plaque build-up.
  2. Brush your teeth after each meal and before you go to bed at night. Carry a travel toothbrush with you to school or work. If you eat but don't have a toothbrush handy, swish water in your mouth to loosen food particles.
  3. Floss at least once a day between your teeth, around your brackets and at your gumline. Reusable floss threaders help patients maneuver dental floss between archwires and teeth. Ask Dr. Pellegrini for tips on how to properly floss while wearing braces.
  4. Avoid foods that are notorious for getting "stuck" in your braces. Foods that are hard, sticky, or stringy like nuts, caramels, popcorn and bubble gum are difficult foods to eat while you are in braces and you may find it is easier to avoid them altogether.

Useful Tools

  • Toothbrush (manual, travel or power operated are all fine)
  • Fluoride toothpaste
  • Dental floss
  • Mini brush that fits between the archwire and your teeth
  • Fluoride rinse
